Double Stage Air Compressor Working. In single acting reciprocating air compressor only single side of the piston is used for the compression of the air and other side is connected to the crankcase and not used for the compression. By using a second piston the compressor can produce air compressed to 175 psi or greater which is roughly 50 psi more than the more common single stage air compressor. When the tank s pressure reaches its engineered upper limit the air compressor shuts off.
To understand the operation of an air compressor let us assume the cycle and indicator diagram for a simple single stage reciprocating air compressor as shown below. Relies on just a single compressor speed.

To understand the operation of an air compressor let us assume the cycle and indicator diagram for a simple single stage reciprocating air compressor as shown below. In three stage air compressor fresh air from the atmosphere enters in a first stage low pressure cylinder. Click the image to enlarge the simple reciprocating air compressor has a piston which reciprocates inside the cylinder wall and cylinder head. The working principle of multistage air compressor is same as double stage air compressor.
